Egurtek 2016 to feature top-level foreign speakers

The 6th Egurtek International Forum of Architecture and Construction in Wood is scheduled to take place on 20-21 October 2016 at the Bilbao Exhibition Centre.  This edition of the event is sponsored by the Basque Government Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The programme is to feature presentations by renowned architects from home and abroad.  These addresses and talks are intended to provide an educational, visual presentation of the works that these specialists have designed and built in wood.

A broad programme of presentations

More than a year before its opening, Egurtek 2016 already boasts a broad range of presentations featuring guest speakers from the world of architecture such as Japan’s Shigeru Ban, the designer of the striking glass and wood Stauffacher building in Zurich, and Canadian Michael Green, who argues for the use of wood in the construction of large buildings.

Also expected to speak are José Cruz, a renowned master of the use of wood in construction and winner of Chile’s National Architecture Award in 2012, and Puerto Rico-born Mónica Rivero, an architect whose projects are all characterised by the quest for value in everyday objects, as exemplified in her home and yoga centre in Sant.   Cugat, Barcelona.

Egurtek is also to feature two Austrian speakers who enjoy great international renown:  architecture professor Hermann Kaufmann, a pioneer of modern construction in wood in Europe known for his use of new wooden materials, and Juri Troy, an outstanding architect who built a prefabricated wood structure insulated with envorbnmentally-friendly wood-shavings known as the “House under the Oaks”.

Domestic speakers will ninclude Fernando Tabueca and Fermin Leache, winners of the Egurtek Prize for Building in 2014 for their work “Casa del Condestable”.

Vitoria-born architect Gorka Elorza will also give a presentation. He is interested in eco-architecture, innovation and sustainability, rehabilitation and accessibility in his work, as exemplified by the detached family house that he designed in Guadalix de la Sierra in the province of Madrid.

The final participant is Catalan architect Jordi Fargas, who en 2011 designed a “passive house” based on prefabricated wooden components to minimise construction time and energy consumption.

Egurtek 2012 will also have an exhibition area, and will host the Egurtek Awards ceremony. These awards are given to mark the best building, best design, best furnishings and best use of local wood.
